Millions of years old: Mold and Other Fungi Predate Dinosaurs—and Human Beings

Imagine traveling backward through time—past cities, farms, the first human settlements, and the earliest civilizations—all the way to the age of dinosaurs.
Giant animals wander through forests of ferns and primitive trees. Some lounge in the morning sun while others feed on vegetation. Fallen trees and decaying plants cover the damp forest floor. Look closely at the tree stumps, rocks, and dead vegetation, and another form of life is already hard at work: fungi.
Fungi existed on Earth long before people built homes. Mold did not originate in dirty houses, and it was not created by modern construction. It is part of an ancient biological kingdom that has survived for hundreds of millions of years by adapting to changing conditions and producing enormous numbers of microscopic spores.
Why Is Mold Here? It Has an Important Job
Outdoors, mold plays an essential role in nature. It helps decompose dead trees, fallen leaves, plants, and other organic material, returning nutrients to the soil. Without fungi and other decomposers, forests would gradually become buried beneath material that never fully decayed.
The problem begins when this natural decomposition process moves indoors. Inside a home, mold may begin consuming the paper covering on drywall, wood framing, insulation, carpeting, fabrics, settled dust, and other organic materials.
Outdoors, mold decomposes the forest.
Indoors, it may begin decomposing your house.
Mold Spores Are Built to Wait
Mold reproduces by releasing microscopic spores into the air. These spores travel through open doors, windows, ventilation systems, clothing, shoes, bags, and even on pets. Some spores inevitably become part of the air and settled dust inside virtually every home.
A viable mold spore does not necessarily begin growing immediately. When conditions are too dry or otherwise unsuitable, it may remain dormant—nearly inactive and waiting.
Then the conditions change.
Moisture arrives through a plumbing leak, roof failure, foundation seepage, flooding, condensation, excessive humidity, or incompletely dried water damage. A suitable temperature and oxygen are present. Drywall paper, wood, dust, insulation, or another organic material supplies food.
When these conditions come together, dormant spores may germinate and begin forming new mold growth. It can appear almost resurrection-like: something that seemed lifeless suddenly becomes biologically active again. The spore was not dead. It was waiting for the right opportunity.
Mold May Be Waiting for You Inside Your Walls!
One of the most easily overlooked locations for mold growth is behind base trim at the bottom of a drywall wall.
Water may travel beneath flooring, enter through a foundation, leak from plumbing, or migrate into the lower portion of a wall. Base trim can conceal the first signs of staining and deterioration. The visible surface may appear relatively normal while moisture remains trapped on the other side.
The cavity between the wall studs may then provide favorable conditions for mold growth:
Moisture that cannot evaporate quickly
Limited air movement that slows drying
Oxygen within the wall cavity
Comfortable indoor temperatures
Drywall paper, wood, dust, and insulation that can provide food
Drywall can also absorb water and carry it upward through capillary action. Consequently, the damage may extend above the point where the water originally contacted the wall.
When mold becomes established behind drywall or base trim, cleaning the visible side of the wall does not address the concealed growth. The wall may feel dry from inside the room while moisture and mold remain on the back of the drywall, insulation, sill plate, or wooden framing.
Why the First 72 Hours Matter
Mold does not operate according to an exact stopwatch. Growth rates vary according to the mold species, temperature, material, and amount of available moisture.
Nevertheless, the first 24 to 72 hours following water intrusion represent a critical period. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends drying water-damaged materials within 24 to 48 hours whenever possible to help prevent mold growth. As time passes, the possibility of germination, colonization, material damage, and concealed contamination increases.
Removing visible water is only the beginning. Moisture may remain beneath flooring, behind base trim, inside insulation, or between wall studs long after the room appears dry.
What You Cannot See May Matter
The presence of a few mold spores does not automatically mean that a home has a mold problem. Mold spores are naturally present indoors and outdoors. The important question is whether moisture has allowed those spores to establish abnormal growth somewhere inside the building.
That determination may require more than looking at the exposed walls. A careful investigation considers:
The building’s water-damage history
Musty or unusual odors
Moisture readings
Staining or deterioration around base trim
Conditions beneath flooring or behind drywall
Laboratory analysis when sampling is appropriate
Comparison of indoor findings with expected outdoor conditions
Mold has survived for millions of years because it is persistent, adaptable, and exceptionally good at taking advantage of moisture. You cannot eliminate every mold spore from a home—but you can investigate the conditions that allow those spores to grow.
