What about Mold Spores? What are Mycotoxins?

Mold colonies reproduce by releasing microscopic spores into the air. These spores are like tiny survival capsules: they can remain dormant for long periods of time until the right conditions appear.

When moisture, humidity, warmth, and a food source such as wood, drywall, dust, paper, carpet, or insulation are present, dormant spores can begin growing again. Mold colonies can eject millions of spores at a time.

It is here that we find ourselves ingesting (eating) spores and breathing spores into our lungs. A person with a normal immune system may be able to handle a moderate exposure to mold spores but young children under 5 years of age elderly people over 65 and immunocompromised patients are especially sensitive to inhalation hazards and ingestion hazards from mold spores.

People who already have breathing problems — such as asthma, allergies, chronic lung conditions, or weakened immune systems — may react more strongly because their lungs and immune systems are already under stress. In those individuals, exposure to mold particles may contribute to coughing, wheezing, sinus congestion, irritated eyes, sore throat, skin irritation, or asthma-like symptoms.
